KUALA LUMPUR (March 17, 2012): Entrepreneurs who fail to display the halal certificate and logo issued by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the State Islamic Religious Departments (JAIN) will face a fine and imprisonment effective July 1.
The director of the Halal Hub Division of Jakim, Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said effective that date, Jakim would no longer recognise the halal certificates issued by the private sector.
"Action will be taken against those who do not comply with this ruling. All this is stated under Section 16 of the Domestic Trade Act 2011," he told Bernama.
He said the department would carry out monitoring throughout the country with the cooperation of the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism.
Hakimah said as of February, a total of 1,420 applications for the halal certificate had been received.
Earlier, it was reported that only the halal certificate and logo issued by Jakim and the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) would be recognised.
